What is a Plea Bargain?
A "plea bargain" is when a deal is offered by the prosecutor to a defandant as a reason for the defendant to plead guilty. A plea bargain allows a defendant to plead guilty in exchange for a lighter sentence or consequence.

Types of Plea Bargains
Charge Bargain: A charge bargain is a type of plea bargain where the prosecutor allows a defendant to plead guilty to a lesser charge or to only some of the charges that has been filed against him/her.

Sentence Bargain: A sentence bargain is a type of plea bargain where the prosecutor allows the defendant to plead guilty, in exchange for a lighter sntence.

Senario
For example, say that a defendant is being charged with two counts of aggravated assult. The prosecutor can allow the defendant to engage in a plea bargain. a plea bargain might be reached in one of three ways:
1) the prosecuting attorney can approach the defendant and his attorney and agree to let the defendant plead guilty to a lesser charge such as disorderly conduct (Charge Bargain)
2) the defendant agrees to plead guilty to one count of aggrevated assult in exchange for a dissmissal of the second count (Charge Bargain)
3) the defendant agrees to plead guilty to both counts of aggrevate assult in exchange for a lighter sentence (Sentence Bargain)
